The Boy Scout's Motto
A drama
This was my first play I wrote. I had a lot of fun writing this piece.
My class was presented with an interesting challenge. As my teacher
stood in the middle of the classroom with an open umbrella, this is the
play i wrote about the unusual scenario.
An older man stands alone under an open umbrella, though it is not raining. The umbrella is a striped pattern with all the colors of the rainbow. A tag is hanging off. A younger professional looking woman stands alone five feet away.
Guy: Nice day out, isn’t it?
Girl: It’s beautiful.
Guy: I agree
Girl: Then why do you have an umbrella out? It’s not raining.
Guy: You never know when it’s going to rain.
Girl: That may be true, but why do you have to have it open? Couldn’t you just carry it around with you.
Guy: I could.
Girl: so why don’t you? Wouldn’t that make more sense?
Guy: I shouldn’t wait until it starts raining to pull out my umbrella. By the time I get to it I will already be wet.
Girl: It wouldn’t take that long to get the umbrella out.
Guy: Always be prepared. Boy Scout’s motto. (Holding up the boy scouts universal hand signal)
Girl: Aren’t you a little too old to be a boy scout?
Guy: Says who?
Girl: I’m pretty sure there’s an age limit on that kind of thing.
Guy: Age is just a number.
Girl: Isn’t that just a line creepy old men use to hit on very young women? You know like age is just a number baby?
Guy: I don’t know, is it?
Girl: I believe it is.
Guy: Are you god? Psychic maybe?
Girl: No.
Guy: Well you seem to know everything?
Girl: I just don’t understand why you have to carry around an open umbrella all day. And why is there a tag hanging off it?
Guy: Cause it’s new.
Girl: Well obviously, but why can’t you cut the tag off?
Guy: Women leave tags on their designer bags all the time.
Girl: But that’s to prove it’s authentic.
Guy: Well this here is an authentic umbrella. And a pretty one that.
Girl: You just want to show off your brand new umbrella.
Guy: You would know.
(Guy walks on twirling his umbrella and lightly whistling. The Woman stands alone unsure of her unusual interaction.)
