Building Community
Our
group’s proposal to build a community is to personally connect with
another. It is important to feel comfortable with one another and the
class should start with learning one another’s name. Start with an
introduction, and from there, learn about the personal interests of
each community member. We believe people feel afraid to participate in
when class when they don’t know who they are speaking to. Effective
communication is dependent upon friendly social interaction. The
community members can actively participate in forums such as discussion
boards. Promote creativity can inspire insightful thoughts and problem
solving skills. Blogging is a helpful tool in building an academic
community. Facebook should not be used for homework but for leisure.
Attaching school work to Facebook makes Facebook lose its value. A blog
is a more appropriate place to interact with classmates on a
concentrated subject. It is also an isolated place only members of the
class will have access to.

This
is a local organization dedicated to helping children and teens
battling cancer lead fun and fulfilling lives. The page is very
personal, giving a background on Nick's story along side pictures.
There are also links, pictures, and stories about children that benefit
from the donations. It is updated consistently with descriptions about
up and coming fundraisers. There is a place to donate as well a
description behind the unique design of the website.

I am personally invested with this foundation. Nicky was a good friend of mine, and his death devastated the community. His parents set up this foundation in honor of him and his spirit. I wrote a paper in English 105 about it which helped me to cope wtih this loss. Check it out here.

What's it all about?
Facebook
is a social networking site and should be treated as such. I use
facebook to talk to friends and family. I understand that Facebook uses
advertisements to make money, however I do not want them on my facebook
page. It is my information and I should be able to deny access to
companies who want my information. I am not the same as everyone else.
Some may want games, a professional page, or advertisements. We should
have the power to chose. There should be more control than just
informing facebook why we don't want certain advertisements. Facebook
is supposed to be personal. No two profiles are the same. We have the
option of filtering advertisements, but we should also have the option
of deleting advertisements all together. Whether we use facebook for
personal ot professional reasons, we should all have the power to
control the information that is being sold to companies. Once something
is released on the internet, it is in cyber space forever. We should be
able to control what is out there.
The best way to use facebook depends on what a particular individual wants from it. I use it to keep in touch with friends. Others may want to promote a business or share ideas. If I were to introduce Facebook to a friend i would tell them it was a way of keeping in touch with others. A way to find friends you want to stay connected with. I would tell them to try it, and play around with facebook and figure out what they want to share with the online community, and what they want to hear more about.

Facebook: A help or a distraction?
I
created Facebook originally to interact with my friends, the reason
facebook was created. Yet, I look at my profile and I have close to 400
friends. Some of these friends may have gone to my high school or
college yet I have never talked to them in person before. Before i came
to Saint Rose I joined the class of 2013 network; soon I was receiving
friend requests from other anxious classmates. I have had conversations
with some on facebook before meeting them. I can honestly say none of
them I have talked to in person. When I do see them on campus, I feel
awkward.
Of my 400 friends I would say a good majority of them I don't even like. Yet I have to be friends with them on facebook because if I chose to de friend them, I could create drama and awkward situations. The point of facebook is to keep in touch with my friends, not people I go to school with. I have removed many people from my newsfeed, which is counter intuitive to the sole purpose of facebook.
Recently, I have seriously considered deleting my facebook account. I do like to keep in touch with family and friends, but I have had too many bad experiences. People have resorted to this form of communication only. Facebook should be a supplemental form of communication not a sole form. Last year I had lost a good friend because she refused to talk to me or confront me over the phone or in person. Because of this incident I have considered deleting facebook for an indefinite period of time.
Facebook can create awkward social situations, when that outweighs the number of friendly interactions, it becomes a problem.
